Don’t Get Caught by Gift Card Expiration Dates

Gift cards and gift certificates often have expiration dates. In the past, some were as soon as six to twelve months. The law has changed where gift cards are concerned, however. The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 (often called the Credit CARD Act) states that gift cards cannot expire until five years from their issue date.

Keep in mind that promotional gift cards (ones you don’t pay for) and paper gift certificates are not covered by this legislation.

If you have a gift card and the retailer refuses to honor it, simply ask to speak to a manager and explain that the laws have changed.
